2 weeks before new year Cisco announce Self-signed x509 certs expire on 2020-01-01 and cannot be created again.

So this popped up in my Twitter feed today, and some slight panic set in, as we have clients with Cisco switches and router. A quick check showed we have 107 Cisco devices out in the wild.

Time to check if any of our devices are affected, and establish what the risks are.

Lots of running show running-config | begin crypto and looking for the crypto PKI trustpoint configuration to see if it expires on 01 Jan 2020.

Risks:

  • SIP over TLS calls will not complete.
  • Devices registered to Cisco Unified CME with encrypted signaling enabled will no longer function.
  • Cisco Unified SRST with encrypted signaling enabled will not allow devices to register.
  • Cisco IOS dspfarm resources (Conference, Media Termination Point, or Transcoding) with encrypted signaling enabled will no longer register.
  • STCAPP ports configured with encrypted signaling will no longer register.
  • Calls through a gateway using MGCP or H.323 call signaling over IPSec without a pre-shared key will fail.
  • API calls that use the Cisco Unified Communications Gateway Services API in Secure Mode (using HTTPS) will fail.
  • RESTCONF might fail.
  • HTTPS sessions to manage the device will display a browser warning which indicates that the certificate has expired.
  • AnyConnect SSL VPN sessions will fail to establish or report an invalid certificate.
  • IPSec connections will fail to establish.

Thankfully Cisco do provide a solution, but we do need to see what other impact IOS upgrade would have.

The solution is to deploy one upgrade the Cisco IOS or Cisco IOS XE software to a release that includes the fix:

  • Cisco IOS XE Software Release 16.9.1 and later
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 15.6(3)M7 and later; 15.7(3)M5 and later; or 15.8(3)M3 and later

After you upgrade the software, you must ALSO regenerate the self-signed certificate and export it to any devices that might require the new certificate in their trust-store.

End result is 37 devices affected. Now to run some tests and apply updates.

Extra Recycling collections Swindon

From Monday, 16 December to Friday, 31 January the Council’s recycling crews will be collecting additional recycling, providing it is sorted correctly and presented in sturdy containers. The containers do not have to be Swindon Borough Council branded.

Additional recycling must be sorted by grouping paper and card recycling together and grouping glass and metal recycling together.

Your additional recyclable materials may be collected by a second vehicle at a different time. Please note we will not be collecting additional non-recyclable waste.

Creating a sanctuary for Great Crested Newts at Mouldon Hill, Priory Vale.

Last night I attended the Council’s Cabinet meeting to be involved in discussions.

🏗️ Shrinking the Town Centre shopping area.
🚗 Reducing traffic on Oxford Road.
🌳 Increasing tree coverage across Swindon.
💶 Investing in phase 2 of The Carriageworks.
🌍 Creating a sanctuary for Great Crested Newts at Mouldon Hill, which is in my ward Priory Vale.

We are working hard to improve things for all across Swindon, but I am particularly delighted to see the sanctuary for Great Crested Newts, the protection of green space within Priory Vale, and that we can achieve this with grant funding.

Voter registration letter sent in error

Anyone who received a letter dated 4 November entitled ‘Notice of review of registration entitlement’ should ignore it.

The error occurred after our printers used an incorrect distribution list. Measures have been put in place to ensure this does not happen again.

Letters of this type are routinely sent out when we have information that suggests a voter is incorrectly registered. It aims to make sure our Electoral Register is accurate and helps prevent voter fraud.

We will be writing to every resident who has received a letter in error to explain what has happened and to apologise.

Oakhurst Bus layover issues to ease.

For some time we have had a lot of complaints about buses using an area in Oakhurst as a layover. It has taken a very long time to get this resolved but I am pleased to say progress has been made following intervention by Swindon Borough Council Cabinet Member Cllr Maureen Penny.

This is an outline of the action taken by them to alleviate the issues of traffic congestion caused by their vehicles laying over at Oakhurst Way during the morning peak.

‘Following complaints received, with effect from 18/10/2019 Swindon Bus Company implemented the following practice:

Drivers operating the following departures on Service 12; 07:34, 08:09 and 08:47 from Oakhurst Way must observe the following operating instruction

Instead of turning right from Tortworth Road into Oakhurst Way they turn left and proceed to and circumnavigate the roundabout at the junction of Garsington Drive and wait any time at the northbound bus stop layby located between Hartington and Ilkeston Roads.

Once any recovery/layover time has been waited they then proceed to the roundabout at the junction of Voyager Drive and commence service at the designated departure time.

We have asked that afternoon/evening peak times are also looked into, and that if the morning change does work then it can be progressed on. Please do provide feedback to us.
